When a telephone call comes through to the Veterinary's Office on the beautiful peaceful island of Alderney, Jenny takes it as a matter of course. A hedgehog is reported to be in a bad way, and as she sets out to examine the creature she has no inkling of what is to come. As always, however, with this most erudite of Mystery Writers, what she finds is far from the norm., and the injuries on the darling little blonde hedgehog cowering in the grass, perplex and concern her. The injuries are not those of the creature's normal perpetrators, the cats and dogs, but appear to be near-fatal stab wounds. That night Jenny is roused from her sleep by a strange, intermittent sound, and upon going to investigate notices a unnerving chill in the air. Something unnatural is creating an atmosphere which causes her stomach to churn with fear. And so is the start of this intriguing and absorbing tale, which gathers pace as it flows along from one tense situation to another.
