Porphyria is the name of an actual blood disease. It is responsible for the lack of certain enzymes in the hemoglobin of red blood cells. Symptoms such as lightened skin pigment, photophobia and receding gums can also be aspects of the illness. In creating a work of fiction I took certain liberties in order to adapt this disorder to the storyline. For example, heightened senses, enhanced strength and telepathic abilities are not part of the disease picture. And contrary to the characters in my book, people suffering from porphyria usually have shortened rather then lengthened life spans. However, it is true that according to the research I conducted in ancient times those afflicted with this disease in small villages and rural areas where superstitions ran rampant were thought to be exhibiting signs of vampirism.I have been interested in vampires as well as other classic movie monsters such as werewolves and mummies since I was a child. Some of my favorite times growing up were spent in front of the TV watching the old classics with Lon Chaney, Boris Karloff and of course Bela Lagosi. I enjoy the gothic and mysterious as opposed to the typical slasher movies and that is what keeps vampires near and dear to my heart.Going blind at the age of nineteen did nothing to deter my interest in movie monsters or writing about them. It was a difficult and challenging time with a lot of temporary setbacks. For a while I was filled with doubts about my ability to persevere. However, with the help and support of those around me as well as my own determination I managed to push through the dark days and plunge ahead into the world of creative fiction.I thoroughly enjoyed writing the first installment of the “Vampire Royalty” series and hope you have as much pleasure reading it.-VHValerie Hoffman is a psychotherapist who resides in Ormond Beach Florida. From the Inside Flap
Andrew Gabriel was awakened from his catatonic slumber by the fragrance of love's passion lost long ago. Andrew's diabolical half brother, Craven Maxwell, politically manipulates his way into the White House. It is Andrew's fear that this most evil and cunning predator, may gain access to the highest authority, using his position to dominate America and eventually, the world. Andrew's odyssey into the world of politics, forgotten and renewed love and passion is hindered by Craven's thirst for power and sadistic scheme to revive his hidden and dark practices. Both Andrew and Craven are what legend refers to as Vampires. Both Andrew and Craven come from the same unholy disposition, the place that allows them to function for hundreds of years, maintaining the illusion of assimilating into humanity while walking a fine line between their need for life sustaining nutrients and their suppliers. Andrew is compelled to purify his people while protecting his race and humanity from the corruption of Craven's absolute supremacy. Andrew is the only one with the power to put an end to Craven s depraved schemes. Craven, however, has no compunction about using Andrew s one vulnerability against him his new found love.
