Mankind’s desire to converse with the dearly departed is unquenchable, but most mediums are exposed as frauds. The spirit world must be frustrated with the reliability of current gateways, so could they construct a better way to connect with the living? This story presents such a possibility, and how one man’s unique skillset forms a bridge between the two realms. David Constantine is a war correspondent, stuck at home in Dulwich London in desperate need of an assignment. During a meal with three of his oldest friends, Jen Hadrian and Mike, Jen wants their platonic relationship to become more intimate. A new job assignment acts as a welcome distraction, because losing her friendship, if it did not work out, would be disastrous. The foreign office website advises ‘do not visit Iraq, even with a dedicated security team’ but he wants to prove something to himself and his interfering mother, who probably arranged for this hazardous gig.Hadrian is ridiculed playfully for his sixth sense amongst the group, especially when conversations peter out, but irrefutable proof is forced upon him in a dramatic and terrifying fashion. Consequently, David trusts his old friend, and accepts an invite into the brutal world of the hereafter. It does not go well. After his mother dies, David receives a time sensitive invite whilst in Iraq, a thrilling race ensues to be in a certain place, at a certain time. However, the location seems bogus, even for other strangers that mysteriously appear.Hadrian presents his proof to the wrong people, a cult that he indirectly approaches. They imprison him, subliminally purging his mind of free thought. The remaining trio must hatch a plan to liberate their old friend, before he transforms into one of their most destructive disciples. The dead, once thought to be impartial, intervene, and as the world succumbs to the cult’s version of utopia, an underground organisation is born.
