Magician's End: Book Three of the Chaoswar Saga (Chaoswar Saga...

Three decades . . . Five Riftwars . . . One magnificent saga: From New York Times bestselling author Raymond E. Feist comes Magician's End, the final book in the epic Riftwar Cycle.Thirty years ago, Feist's first novel, Magician, introduced us to an orphan boy named Pug, who rises from slavery to become a Master Magician, and to Midkemia and the Riftwar, an epic series of battles between Good and Evil that have scarred Pug's world for generations. After twenty-nine books, Feist delivers the crowning achievement of his renowned bestselling career: Magician's End, the final chapter in The Chaos Wars, the climax of his extraordinary Riftwar Cycle.Pug, now the greatest magician of all time, must risk everything he has fought for and everything he cherishes in the hope of destroying an evil enemy once and for all. But to achieve peace and save untold millions of lives, he will have to pay the ultimate price.

From Publishers Weekly

Readers who have experienced all, or most of the preceding 29 books in Feist's best-selling epic fantasy series, will be eager to find how it all ends. But even those who have kept up religiously with the characters and plot may find the resolution—which does not shut the door to more books set in the world of Midkemia—predictable and somewhat anticlimactic. His initial protagonists Pug, a master wizard, and Tomas, a superior warrior, are still around, and committed to fighting the forces of darkness to save their world. Pug's fate is heavily foreshadowed—as early as chapter one, he's warned that he must prepare "to sacrifice everything to save everything." That ultimate confrontation is a long time coming, and long stretches of the book pass with Pug offstage. There's not much here to distinguish this from countless other fantasy tales (the political intrigue is very dull), and the freshness that marked Feist's earlier work—including his ruthlessness at killing off significant players—has dimmed, unsurprisingly, after so long. From Booklist

*Starred Review* The riveting conclusion to the Chaoswar Saga and the Riftwar Cycle is satisfying in every way. The story of Pug, an orphan boy of Midkemia who faces war and slavery on an alien planet and survives to become a master magician, is nothing short of exceptional. In this, the final episode of his life, he grapples with the concept of a higher being that is nearly impossible for mere humans to comprehend. Physics, astronomy, philosophy, and the meaning of the universe are all discussed, and the characters are almost secondary to such ruminations. A series of lessons is taught to a select group of magicians including Pug, which they must then use to determine how to overcome the evil that threatens their world with annihilation. While these magicians are learning their lessons, there is a civil war in the Kingdom, and the Taredhel have unleashed the Dread into Midkemia. Feist has created a universe that is every bit as captivating as Anne McCaffrey’s Pern, Mercedes Lackey’s Valdemar, and Marion Zimmer Bradley’s Darkover. In Magician’s End, he has masterfully brought the entire epic in a full circle. --Rebecca Gerber

From the Back Cover

As it began, so shall it end—in magic, mystery, and majesty. . . Magician's End Thirty years ago, Raymond E. Feist wrote his first novel, Magician, a story about an orphan boy named Pug who is thrust by a war into captivity in an alien world, only to rise from slavery to become a Master Magician. Magician introduced readers to Midkemia and the Riftwars, an epic series of battles between Good and Evil that have scarred this remarkable realm for generations. Now, after twenty-nine books (authored and coauthored), Feist delivers the crowning achievement of his renowned bestselling career: Magician's End, the final chapter of the Chaoswar Saga and the climax of his extraordinary Riftwar Cycle. An uneasy quiet has settled upon Midkemia in the wake of a surprise invasion. But the land is far from peaceful. Leaderless, the Kingdom is on the brink of anarchy and civil war, unless Hal conDoin, Duke of Crydee, and his brothers can rally their allies to crown a new king. They must move quickly, for war has left the land vulnerable to an agency of horrific destruction not of this world. No one is safe, not even the Star Elves whose city deep in the Grey Tower Mountains has come under attack by an ancient darkness that seeks to extinguish every living thing in Midkemia.Yet the bravery of determined warriors—brothers in blood and arms—is not enough to ensure the Kingdom's preservation without the magic of the Master Sorcerer Pug. A powerful spell has trapped him, his son Magnus, and two unlikely allies in an unfamiliar realm, and they must find their separate ways home—a journey of memory and discovery that will illuminate the truth of the destiny that awaits them. But to save Midkemia—and everything he has fought for and all he cherishes—Pug will have to pay the ultimate price.A breathtaking tale of elves and men, love and hate, ambition and sacrifice, intrigue and brotherhood, war and peace, Magician's End brilliantly captures the essence of life and the eternal struggle for survival. It is an extraordinary ending to the magnificent saga that has made award-winning Raymond E. Feist a legend.
