The Summer Is Ended and We Are Not Yet Saved

Martin is going to Bible Camp for the summer. He's going to learn archery and swimming, and he's going to make new friends. He's pretty excited, but that's probably because nobody told him that this is a horror novel!

From Booklist

Well, here’s something you don’t see every day: a slasher movie in print form. Eleven-year-old Martin’s mother works in the movie business, doing (what else?) special-effects make-up for horror movies. She has a job in Toronto but doesn’t have the money to hire somebody to look after Martin, so he volunteers to ship himself off to Bible camp, where someone is systematically killing off the campers in various maniacal ways. The violence is right out of a 1980s-style horror flick, as is the cast of characters: Martin and his fellow campers; Chip and his fellow camp counselors; and affable Father Tony, the camp’s leader. Lean and mean and hugely entertaining, with no high-falutin’ literary pretenses—note to fans of slasher flicks: yes, the villain is exactly who you think it is—but with a genuinely shocking conclusion, the book should be a big hit with old-school horror fans. --David Pitt
