I should give some backstory on what a “Purple Mongoose story” is. Camp Keuka is an overnight summer camp in New York’s Finger Lakes region, and is a summer camp in the most classic of senses. Wooden cabins. A big dining hall. Activities from archery to sailing, and traditions and customs rooted in nearly 100 years’ worth of summers. Campers of all ages are told for years and years that there is this super secret, cloak-and-dagger, “we can’t tell you the details or we’ll have to make you disappear” story of “The Purple Mongoose.” It’s referenced periodically as a means to mystify and intrigue, and provide a little aura to the status one holds as a counselor. “It’s our thing, but it can be your thing, when you work here.” Oh, and the story is not for the faint of heart, so we say.
