Underworlds

"I doubt that there's a Heaven, but I'm certain that there are a multitude of hells."There are different kinds of Underworlds. Bentley is the ruler of his underworld. After years spent in organised crime, he has become a gangland figure with a fearsome reputation. He has money and power, but he craves something else. There is another sort of power, something that most people don't believe in, and Bentley wants to possess it. One of Bentley's employees might just hold the key to what Bentley is seeking. Vincent works for Bentley, though he is part of a different underworld. Everyone knows that Vincent is a killer, though there are only rumours about how he works. When Bentley wants someone dead, Vincent makes it happen. He won't give up his secrets though. He does his work and he doesn't talk about it. The criminal underworld know not to cross Bentley or Vincent will make sure that you die in agony and terror. Some say it's black magic, some say it's the occult and some say Vincent is a demon. The two underworlds have been working together in uneasy harmony, but it can't last. Bentley is too curious and too desperate for power to take no for an answer. Vincent can't keep his boss from asking stupid questions and seeking out dangerous allies. In "Underworlds", the horrors of crime and the horrors of the supernatural collide in a horrible descent into suffering and terror. Caution: This story contains deeply upsetting depictions of both mental, physical and spiritual torture. It is not recommended for sensitive readers. JM Rhodes enjoys reading Stephen King, Clive Barker, Thomas Ligotti, MR James and HP Lovecraft. This is her first novel. She says, "I wanted to explore the violent, toxic masculinity of crime and consider how it might intersect with the worst elements of the supernatural."
