This was the darkest period in ancient Chinese history. For over four hundred years, much of the land was subjected to massive war between states set up by both nomadic tribes and Han usurpers. The devastation to the land was horrendous. The general population was frequently massacred without any legitimate reason while the "central" government, cowering in the south, was either equally cruel and corrupt or impotent. Yet the period was of great importance to the growth of the greater China and its culture, mixing the hot blood of the "barbaric" tribes with the finer culture of the scholars. It created a foundation on which the later Chu and Tang dynasties could be built upon. As in all upheavals, the period gave rise to heroic characters such as Mulan and Empress Mao and tragic ones making the time a rich tapestry. It is by far the most colorful since the Warring Period that led to the first unified empire of China.
