Hurts Like the Devil (County Line Horror)

A Coming-of-Age Southern Gothic Thriller“God, it hurts!” Rebecca’s voice slices through the night. Beneath her is a slick carpet of wet leaves. With her right leg stretched in front of her, entangled in a length of rusty barbed wire, she grasps her calf with both hands. Blood drenches the white sleeves of the new top she’s wearing. As ridiculous as it sounds, I flirt with the idea of her bleeding to death out here where we’re not even supposed to be, where no one knows where we are. Rebecca holds her palms out as if to show me how bad the injury is. The grotesqueness of the situation—my cousin on the ground in the woods, holding blood-stained hands toward me—causes my breath to catch. Blood on her hands . . . No. Scratch that. Symbolically, it is my hands that are covered in red. If Rebecca were to die as a result of this, it would be nobody’s fault but my own. It was my stupid idea to sneak off in the first place. My idea to push things to the limit.
