Book Synopsis-The Preservatory ‘The Preservatory’ is aimed primarily at the Women’s fiction market. It is a contemporary story set in the North-East of England and it chronicles the heartfelt experiences of a middle-aged teacher, Laura as she deals with her experiences of bullying from her far less than exemplary head teacher, Gordon. It is entitled ‘The Preservatory’ because of a conservatory that has strange properties that at first seem healing, then as the book progresses more malign. It is a tale initially of despair as the main character Laura deals with the psychological and material consequences of having her career snatched from her. Then as the book progresses she learns how to adjust to circumstances by forming allies with those who have been similarly treated and also through the carthartic experience of writing a book. Laura unwittingly begins to write a story that peculiarly anticipates future events as she and her friend, the tenacious Elizabeth embark on a campaign of bitter retribution. Paul, Laura’s long suffering partner has to deal with not only her extreme mood swings but now her bewildering secrecy. Together, Laura and Elizabeth adopt the role of Nemesis and they seek retribution not only for themselves but others who have been wronged by the Hubris; Gordon. As a consequence of their actions the head teacher loses his credibility, his job and his reasons for living. No tale is unique as the myths of Ancient Greece justify and give credence to the inevitability of the plot as it unfolds. To what extent however is the ‘Preservatory’ responsible for the outcome of events?
