In an effort to find closure regarding her husband's sudden death two years earlier, Emily McLofflin, successful author of children's books, leaves Kansas City to attend a writer's conference and spend several weeks in an isolated cabin in Michigan. En route to the cabin, she visits McLofflin Park, which she is told is haunted. When she arrives at the cabin, unnerving incidents lead her to believe she may not be alone in the forest. Two days later she leaves for the conference. At the conference, however, her world is shaken even more when she encounters a man she believes to be her late husband. The mystery man claims to be Michael Jacobs, but to Emily he appears to be her beloved David miraculously returned to her. As she probes into the lives of the two men, Emily continues to be troubled by strange dreams and visions. She finds herself pulled deeper and deeper into a tangled web of unanswered questions as the truth eludes her. Are David and Michael one in the same? Is the ghostly presence in the cabin somehow connected? Emily's search for these answers reveals the surprising twist of fate that brings them together and connects them to their history.
