This is a book about Jim Morrows, who as a young man, is given an experimental drug to see if it will help his asthma. He has a reaction to it, which causes atrophy on his left side. As he tries to regain use of his entire body, he is given an injection for the atrophy, which causes his death. His spirit goes to Heaven, where he is requested if he will accept a gift to help split souls cross over fully. Once he accepts, he is returned to life. By chance, his first involuntary reading is the sheriff’s daughter. Due to him being correct in what he told her, in an emergency, the sheriff asks if he can try to locate a missing child. After an initial failure, he discovers how to do it, and then locates the child. Soon he is being asked by numerous departments for his assistance. When he is still in high school, he is asked to participate in an experiment for the government to see if there is a possible use. He is housed at a Marine base, and he decides to do PT with them. Due to his perseverance, and his actions during an emergency at the base, he is given the opportunity to join the Marine Corp, and when he finishes officer training school, he is made into a lieutenant. At the same time, he is continuing doing the readings and locating missing people, and is asked to help solve crimes, where there is no I.D. on the perpetrator. He starts a business doing the investigations, but he personally shuns publicity. He is talked into giving an interview by his friend and secretary, and the reporter accompanies him on a rather gruesome investigation. When she writes the story, she is asked to change it to make Jim a fraud, which she refuses to do. Over the course of the next few years, Jim gets married and in an investigation, he ends up with temporary custody of a young girl. When he has to turn over custody of her, he finds out his wife is pregnant. Jim can do no wrong in his daughters eyes, until some of her friends talk about a TV show with a psychic. When they call psychics creepy, her whole attitude towards her father changes, until she can barely be in the same room as him. His wife is writing his cases into books, and she just states she knows the investigator. Things come to a head between his daughter and Jim at a family party, and he tells her to decide, either deal with it, or get out. When his granddaughter is born, his daughter and a few of her friends have Jim and his wife baby-sit, and as the kids get older, they join the family, and the kids help him get through some tough times. When his granddaughter is injured, Jim starts training her as his replacement. While he teaches her how to deal with and handle her talent, he also helps her in aspects that she had never even considered.
