At the Mountains of Madness by H.P. Lovecraft At the Mountains of Madness tells of the Miskatonic University Expedition into the Antarctic in search of deep-level specimens of rock and sod, and relates for the first time the strange and terrible experiences and discoveries of the expedition, in the hope that the Starkweather-Moore Expedition which is about to take off on the same venture, will give up the idea as too terrifying and horrible to undertake. A gripping word picture in three parts—of science—and a lost world! At the Mountains of Madness was written in 1931. It was published in three parts in Astounding Stories in 1936. However, the story was “harshly” edited, particularly the third part. Lovecraft was outraged and called F. Orlin Tremaine, the editor of Astounding Stories, “that god-damn’d dung of a hyaena”. In this edition we have retained the paragraph structure of the Astounding Stories version of the novella. We have attempted to restore the missing passages to the text and have indicated those passages in a different colored text. This edition also contains all of the original illustrations.
