In 1909, naive, romantic nineteen-year-old Jane Ludlow secures employment at Beauford Manor as companion to Lady Sophia Beauford, during her final summer before she debuts into London society. Lady Sophia is a headstrong girl whom her widowed mother Lady Beauford and her half-brother Lord Ralph Beauford despair of making presentable in time for the following year, therefore they rely on Jane to quickly instill some maturity and sense into seventeen-year-old Sophia. Unfortunately, Jane quickly becomes distracted by the aloof and distant Ralph Beauford, the fourteenth Earl, who she suspects is connected to the strange goings-on at Beauford Manor, but whom she is also becoming dangerously attracted to. She becomes convinced that something terrible once happened at Beauford Manor and is determined to find out the truth about the mysterious occurrences, but could she be putting her own life in danger? Worse still, could everything she thinks she’s seen and heard actually be a product of her own mind?
