The quiet float trip that Drew Gallagher promised his wife, Jan, began with a warm, fall sun reflecting from the placid waters of the Kinnicut River as they collected water samples for the environmental trust Drew managed. As their day progressed, they realized that something was terribly wrong with “their” river that idyllic weekend: The wild creatures they saw acted strangely and the normal livestock that roamed the river banks were absent. That first night on the river ushered in the early arrival of a coastal storm as Jan was lured from her warm sleeping bag by strange lights and voices coming from the dark woods that surrounded the river. When Drew arose later to find Jan missing, his search for his wife began with the discovery of a recently plundered ancient graveyard and ended tragically with a fall into a deep ravine that knocked him unconscious. He awoke at the edge of the cold, rising waters of the river to discover a backwoods girl, Angela, kneeling over him. As time passed, his worst fears materialized, and he soon found that all hopes of finding his wife alive and surviving the ordeal were carried on the thin shoulders of this strange little girl who bore terrible secrets and fears of her own.
