The first foray into the gothic fantasy setting of Pænvicta, 'Death's True Name' is the journal of a necromancer - a magic-wielder whose specialty lies in the raising of corpses as un-dead minions. After having lived his entire life as a cold and selfish outcast, the dark sorcerer must gather himself to undertake a journey on which his continued existence depends: a pilgrimage to a remote, isolated location, where he might enact a ritual which would enable him to cheat death itself. But the world of Pænvicta is not so black-and-white, and good and evil are ever matters of perspective; is there anything which could sway the necromancer from his chosen path? What events could lead a man to pursue so grisly a source of forbidden power, and at the cost of his very humanity? Is true redemption obtainable, or is it a fallacy? In the necromancer's journal, he will divulge the secrets of his art - as well as his deep, personal introspections - to any who happen upon it.
