North Yorkshire, 1650. After nearly 10 years of civil war, culminating in the execution of Charles I, England is in a state of shock.Poet Andrew Marvell takes up a new job as tutor at Appleton House, family home of Sir Thomas Fairfax, Third Lord of Cameron and until recently, commander of the Parliamentary army. Both men are looking for a time of peace and withdrawal from public life but the powerful forces that have only just torn the country apart have other ideas.Fairfax must come to terms with what he has done and what kind of man he really is, if he is to escape the pressures of public life.
