This is a story, a long time in the telling. Stanvis has finally decided the time is right to find out about his past. In typical Stanvis fashion how he goes about seeking the information lands him in trouble, and not only with his brothers. In this novella we will learn why Stanvis was abandoned and a little about Jacks, his true love. After tricking his father into giving him his memories back, which sadly leaves him frustrated and seldom sober he finally annoys Reighn enough that he takes action to save his brothers sanity and his own. What was it that caused Stanvis to want to remember the worst time of his life? Her name is Jaqueline Numond, or Jacks for short. A near-sighted Leopard who has recently arrived at Dragon’s Gap, and like Stanvis she has her own set of problems. The very second Stanvis saw her, he knew she was his Shadow. The one destined to be his one true love, but he will not claim her until he has discovered what led his birth parents to abandon him. His greatest fear is the possibility he may be the one dragon not good enough to accept a Shadow into his life. Will Jacks overcome her cat’s impulsive nature, will Stanvis and his dragon be able to move into a future with a certain Leopard?
From the Inside Flap
After Stanvis delivered his bombshell, Patrycc left him to roam around the fortress while he visited some of his guests or patients. Stanvis was never sure who or what they really were. He only knew they came to his uncle when they needed help.Eventually, he found himself in an enclosed garden. It was one of the most peaceful places he had ever experienced. Green grass that reminded him of Ireland covered the ground and a scent of honeysuckle filled the air. Tall trees surrounded a pond that a waterfall gently fell into. Without realizing it, serenity wrapped around him like a warm blanket, easing the tension from his shoulders and calming his dragon.A voice he had not heard for months spoke from the shadows. "This is a place of contemplation to settle the mind of both human and dragon."Stanvis nodded as he remained staring into the water at the fish that came to the surface."Does it work?"Ace Battle smiled as he stood beside Stanvis. "For some I imagine it does.""Huh.""Why are you here, Stan?""You know, that seems to be a common question."Ace did not reply. He had played this game often with Stanvis and knew it could go on for hours. While Stanvis would answer questions with a question and by the end of the game, the original question would be forgotten. Usually by then Stanvis would be in the middle of a fight, which he or Reighn would have to extract his ass from.Stanvis smiled. Ace, it seemed, was not going to play damn older brothers and there was no denying that Ace was as much his older brother as Reighn was."Reighn threw my ass here."Ace grinned as he moved his eyes over him, searching for broken bones or bruisers, seeing none. He looked to see if he was angry. "What did you do?""Why is it always my fault?""Stan!"Stanvis sighed and rubbed his hands over his face. "I got Papa really drunk and tricked him into giving me my memories back. I've stayed drunk until this morning."Ace said nothing, just waited for Stanvis to tell him the rest. Patrycc waited in the shadows as Stanvis hung his head and told Ace as quickly as he could, hoping he would not hear his own reasons, which now seemed hopeless. "I thought I would go through life not wanting to go back there to that time. To find out why I wasn't good enough for them. But then I met her, my Shadow. It shook me and I realized maybe if I don't have answers, I will make the same mistakes and she will find me unworthy. And because she is a shifter, she will be stuck with a mate she comes to hate.""Stan that will not happen."Stubbornly, Stanvis said. "But you don't know that, just like me. I don't know it won't.""Stan." Ace said and waited until he looked at him. "You were young. What could a dragonet do to make his parents abandon him?""I don't know. That is the problem.""What does your dragon say?""He is scared. He doesn't want to go back there to that time.""I see, and why do you think that is?"I could not protect my Stan. I failed him.Ace smiled as he softly comforted Stanvis' dragon. "I understand what you are saying, but you were young, too. How were you to save yourself and Stan?"It was my duty."And yet, if I remember rightly, did you not force your emergence to call to the Dragon Lord?"Yes, we were dying."So you fulfilled your duty then. As you are now."Stanvis' dragon was silent. Ace could feel him thinking over what he said. "So think about this, my friend, if you as a dragonet could do that and survive. Going back for Stanvis and looking at memories cannot be as frightening. Perhaps it will be what you both need to claim your Shadow and live a good life."Perhaps.Ace slapped Stanvis's shoulder as he told him. "You and your dragon need to do what you need to do. To make your Shadow safe and feel loved. That is your duty as a dragon and a Kingsley."With that, Ace left him and with a nod to Patrycc, he placed his hands in his pockets and strolled unhurriedly from the garden. Understanding now what had drawn him to this part of the fortress this morning, a place he had spurned since arriving here. Stan remained staring sightlessly into the pond as Patrycc asked from behind him. "Stanvis, are you ready?"Stanvis' dragon let out a loud moan that dropped him to his knees. "Uncle no, please, not now. We are not ready."Patrycc hardened his heart as he had done many times before and stated. "Stanvis, my nephew, you are ready. Let yourself return to the time and place that holds you captive."In an instance, Stanvis was swept back to a place he had not seen since he was a child. He found himself on a small hill in the mountains he had lived in for just over a year. He braced himself and trapped the scream of denial behind his lips as his dragon covered his eyes with his tail wrapped around his body. I will not look, I cannot. We must, it is what we have to do.No, I will not. I cannot, you don't understand. Then make me understand. No, I will not.Stanvis felt someone standing next to him. He whirled around, hands raised in fists and his mouth dropped open. He dropped his hands...
