"Amon Prince of the Black Carnage" is the first novel in a fantasy series by Jacklynn Portis. The story takes place in Darkwood, also called Myrvior, and it follows the adventures of Savus, who is part of a scouting party tasked with exploring new lands for the Lyaenid Empire. Savus follows a man who makes decisions that determine the survival of everyone involved. Claster's leadership is questionable, and Savus stands up against the injustice he creates. When Savus is betrayed and separated from everyone by Claster, he meets Grautr, an ax wielder who can breathe underwater, Nivee, a half-elf, and Martin, a two-blade swordsman. Savus also befriends a god who guides him to ensure the dwarves are protected. On their journey, they fight against the blood-thirsty Strigoi, the undead Draugr, and Ghouls, threatening everyone's survival—including Amon, the son of Belynda. Several challenges arise and have disastrous consequences for the warrior's plan. They become inventive and strategic and sometimes make hard decisions to flee. The dwarfs use their crafting skills; Savus is the leader and thinker, Nivee is a spellcaster and complainer, and Grautr is sentimental and honorable. Savus awakens a fierce dragon named Drankine, the Cattle Eater, with Odin's horn. Azaria, the Dragon Empress, spared the warrior's life. Their journey brings them to fascinating places, including a vast forest, an underground world, and the floating island cities left behind by the Nazguls three thousand years ago, just in time to save their comrades.
