Sanctuary (Sanctuary Chronicles)

"We have no clue what we're about to discover, but it will lead us to everything else."The good news: we finally killed all the local zombies. The not-as-good news: I've been bitten. But assuming all goes well, and no one has to shoot me in the face, we'll finally have peace, quiet, and sanctuary ... until we decide to go play golf, where we make a stomach-turning discovery and run headlong into a deeply traumatic experience from Morgan's past. And Morgan being Morgan, this means she's going to pick a fight, which turns into another (reluctant) group road trip. We're going to go back to the fortress she stopped at on her cross-country trip and save the people trapped there from Marcus, his thugs, and their twisted ideas, even though we're outnumbered like usual. We've got a solid plan to rescue the people who want to leave and bring them back with us. Then everything will be totally great. Of course, nothing is simple or goes according to plan. It's a battle on two fronts this time--one against humans, the other against zombies--and it's going to take everything we have to survive. It's kill or be killed.

Diane Donovan, Midwest Book Review Greg Rode has delivered another unusual book in the classic zombie sub-genre of dystopian-themed books. Sanctuary retains all that made the previous books such a joy to read. The fluid and humorous dialogue I've come to love made me relive the breath-of-fresh-air sensation I got from previous titles in the series. The action sequences still read like a Hollywood script with their concise and excellent descriptions, and the high stakes of each encounter are forever present as I never knew how they would turn out and whether everyone would emerge unscathed. The now well-established characters remain true to themselves and were done justice in this sequel. This was a wild ride and fellow zombie enthusiasts will like Rode's take on this beloved genre. A sequel and series worth reading.

The story unfolds many surprises which will delight readers that think all zombie stories are alike. Sanctuary certainly stands out as the survivors consider and adopt flexible, changing perspectives in reaction to revelations and discoveries about the vastly changed world and the power plays between humans and zombies. The action and adventure develops nicely into the story of how humans have changed in response to this adversity. Readers receive a vivid account that both stands on its own and contributes to the series as a whole as new characters join the group to expand its purposes and perceptions. The result is another zombie story that is anything but ordinary. Sanctuary is highly recommended.

About the Author

GREG RODE is the author of the Sanctuary Chronicles series (and a children's book he hasn't quite figured out what to do with yet). He lives in Cornelius, North Carolina with his family and two small dogs that would be of no use whatsoever when the zombies come. He used to live next to the golf course described in Shotgun Finish, but has moved twice since then. The zombies followed him anyway, which is a good thing since they keep him out of trouble. He is still not a very good golfer.
