The Lust Lizard of Melancholy Cove CD (Pine Cove Series, 2)

The town psychiatrist has decided to switch everybody in Pine Cove, California, from their normal antidepressants to placebos, so naturally—well, to be accurate, artificially—business is booming at the local blues bar. Trouble is, those lonely slide-guitar notes have also attracted a colossal sea beast named Steve with, shall we say, a thing for explosive oil tanker trucks. Suddenly, morose Pine Cove turns libidinous and is hit by a mysterious crime wave, and a beleaguered constable has to fight off his own gonzo appetites to find out what's wrong and what, if anything, to do about it.

From AudioFile

Originally published in 1999, Moore's amusing tale of sex, drugs, and sea creatures gains a second life in the voice of Oliver Wyman. As the local therapist begins experimenting with her patients' medications and the local constable gives up his habitual marijuana use, a sea creature rises from his murky sleep, and Pine Cove becomes center stage for all sorts of chaos and zaniness. Wyman's soft, congenial voice proves perfect for Moore's sardonic yet bemused tone, especially when paired with characters such as Constable Theophilus Crowe. Wyman maintains a nuanced and steady narrative while also portraying a cast of multiple species with eccentric and, often, slightly perverted personalities. L.E. © AudioFile 2010, Portland, Maine
