Ezra was gone. Sara got up from the chair in the kitchen and went back into the parlor. Her father's rifle was leaning on the fireplace where Ezra had left it the night before. She picked up the rifle and the lamp and walked back into the kitchen. It was nearly 9:30 and there was no moon in the sky which made it impossible to see anything outside the kitchen window. “Where on earth had Ezra gone? He was afraid of his own shadow.” Sara thought. “I guess I could wait until morning to go search for him. But then it might be too late.” Sara wasn't sure what to do.
