Fabulously wealthy, Al Farkus lived the high life until he lost his fortune in the stock market crash of 1987. Suddenly, he faces the indignity of having to work for a living. But what kind of job would be appropriate for a vampire? Driving a taxicab, at night, of course!Al had moved to Madison, Wisconsin for a cushy lab job at the university, but when he arrived at this rather provincial burg, he found the job had fallen through. Stranded and desperate, Al gets the sudden inspiration that he should trying his hand at cabdriving. He applies at a worker-owned-and-operated cooperative cab company and faces the greatest horror of all, a job interview.But how is Al to deal with co-workers whom he views as inferiors? And although Al has renounced violence, violence seems to follow him wherever he goes. Still, the new job adds spice to the vampire's long existence as he copes with eccentric co-workers, cranky passengers and psychotic murderers.
