The hospital had opened its doors on November 1, 1866, it was originally built for disabled and displaced war veterans, housing 400 veterans, but after a building project in 1868, it had expanded to 3000 occupants. Room 1969 was first designated room 69, but over the years, and after many additions, it finally became room 1969. From the start the room had developed a reputation, every occupant had either died mysteriously or had just vanished.
