The Prince of Luster and Decay: a Tarnish prequel

In war, men don't only fight the enemy. Sergeant Knox leads the Head Knockers, a unit of scout-saboteurs in the war against the Dread Duke and his armies. They are the favorite squad among Captain Brighton’s Stormwalkers, until an ambush kills the Captain, half the company, and Knox’s best men. Now the new Captain has new orders. He’s sending the Head Knockers to investigate the possible source of the attack. The town they find appears empty, but something waits for them in the darkness. And they’ll need both heart and steel to defeat it.This stand alone, sword and soldiery novella is also a prequel to the fantasy novel Tarnish.

About the Author

If taking a college fencing class, eating from the trash can, and smelling like an animal were qualifications for becoming a sword-swinging barbarian, J. D. Brink might be Conan's protégé.  But since that career path seemed less than promising, he has instead been a sailor, spy, nurse, and officer in the U.S. Navy, as well as a gravedigger, insurance adjuster, and school teacher in civilian life.  Today (summer, 2014) he and his family live in south Texas, where the heat makes smelling like an animal a natural part of life.  In his writing, as in life, Mr. Brink enjoys dabbling in multiple genres.
