Earth was just about mined-out. no resources were left of any significant value so the only other place was the asteroid belt. this was far and expensive to mine, but ships were available to go to space collect the ore. the only problem to all that was, something very sinister and dangerous, was locked away inside one of them asteroids. the aliens who put it there was hoping this entity was not last long enough to be discovered. Little did they know it was found long before it dissipated into nothing and was hell-bent in letting its captures know it was not too happy.
