This is a fantastic story of Björn Björnson, a young Norwegian sea captain and Arctic explorer who, tackling a Polar bear single-handed on an ice-floe, is struck unconscious by a blow on the head. His life is despaired of, but he is saved by a daring brain operation which lasts for over an hour. During this time, an amazing metamorphosis has taken place. The explorer finds himself in another world - the world of the long-forgotten past. As Bjarni Herjulfsson, son of a Viking chieftain, he sails the Seven Seas in search of America. The story of his lives and his sojourns in Valhalla is an amazing one, and his love affair with the fairy Nise - the Lady of the Fjords - forms a powerful thread throughout the novel. This is a story of Viking legends - and an exploration of reincarnation.
