Corporal Haley is ordered to track down a deserter. Barry Dryden has gone AWOL. Haley and Dryden were once close, and Haley desperately wants to find Dryden before his old friend is sentenced to the brig.Haley follows his trail back to Madfall, an isolated Welsh village. This secretive community, hidden in the Snowdonia mountains, is the habitat of the exceptionally rare – and exceptionally dangerous – Snowdonia eagle, a breed of predatory bird that terrorises both animals and humans.Haley asks around, but nobody wants to talk to him. There is one name that comes up again and again, though: Aunty Aelwen, a reclusive old woman that the locals whisper about fearfully. Sensing a connection to Dryden, Haley tries to find Aelwen, though she does not want to be found. While Haley investigates, a string of mysterious killings occur around the village. A strange reptilian creature – far deadlier than the enormous eagles – stalks the villagers from the sky. The villagers collude to hide the mutilated bodies of the monster’s victims. When Haley rescues a local woman from the talons of an eagle, she warns him that there are worse things in Madfall than hungry birds.
