This is an adult fantasy novel, both humorous and serious. Bagtooth and Ranklediff, two characters in the Caravan of Fools - a troupe of scammers, fortune tellers, performers who tour the various towns in the Valley of Tears - are usurped from their carefree lives and enter upon an adventure of epic proportions. They encounter the surly Heliograbbus, Stable Master to King Mulajawawa; Garth, proprietor of the Turtle Inn; Thindella, the Diarist; and, most mysterious of all, Gulu the Flailer. Among the mysteries to be discovered: What is the truth behind the myth of the Eruption? What is Gulu's terrible plan for the Orb? What is the Blimby Hole? And, probably most important of all, what is the White Tulip? Other characters include: crusty Osmond, devious Ostick, lovely Edallia, mysterious Nirma, and Beak the Talonicus.
