Armor of the Centauress: Volume I

A child's world disintegrates around her when an unknown army raids her home. In a moment where she is certain that her life is about to end, a monster made of rippling black steel steps from the shadows to rescue her. It is a thing twisted together from human and horse, and behind its iron face lies the face of a woman. Given no other hope of survival, the girl allows herself to be taken into this creature's service, and a new world opens up before her; one of violence, where war is fought for wealth and status. Bewildered in this new life, she is filled with questions, but none are so pressing as those concerning the strange creature -- the centauress -- that has become her benefactor.Where did she come from? Why does she live among humans? Why did she choose a life of violence? When and how did she receive her many scars and the wound that makes her lame in her hip? Why is it that she so rarely smiles or laughs? Finally and most vitally, when first she saw the centauress, was she right to take her for a monster?
