Too Many People

Stephen Heggeman’s debut collection, Too Many People, features one passive eccentric who utters out their cynical detachment from the rest of the world in an excessively wordy food review, as well as a group of data scientists spending Christmas in an abandoned South Dakota gold mine learning if people are even necessary. The seven narratives included in this collection introduces readers to Harald, the warrior wishing to be the first king of Norway only to find himself facing down a killer mermaid, many evil spirits, and one crazy Irish monk named Grellan, or is it King Mughroin Mac Sochlachan? These are selected examples of the harsh assortment of characters and settings that compose the perfectly normal fiction of Too Many People. Heggeman’s stories take on festering hatred of the other, the brutal absurdity of devotion and faith, and Christmas jingles in the style of decorative ruthless cold dictation. Stephen Heggeman is the author of From Away. The first novel in The Book of Fugues series.
