We meet teenager Cassie Pinkham, who grudgingly is reading books for the cantakerous bookkeeper, Mr. Gussy, as he recovers from surgery. Gussy sends Cassie back to his bookstore, warning Cassie that there is a particular book - The Dark Tome - that is not to be opened. Cassie, naturally, decides to open up the cover and see what it's all about.
