Hidden in the woods near Stevens Point, Wisconsin, Boy Scout Lane is a lonely, half-mile dirt road that has inspired decades of chilling folklore. Local legends tell of an entire troop of Boy Scouts who perished here—murdered by a deranged leader, lost in the forest, or burned in a freak fire. Hidden behind a rusted gate off East Dexter Trail near Dansville, Michigan, lies Seven Gables Road. Folk tales tell of a woman accused of witchcraft who cursed the land before dying in a fire, declaring that “the last to cross the gate, first to die.” Years later, a family built a new house where she once lived—only for the husband to descend into madness, murdering his family, setting the house aflame, and hanging himself from what locals now call “the Hanging Tree.” Today, visitors report hearing unearthly screams, seeing figures hanging from trees, and experiencing car alarms, failed electronics, and eerie sensations of being watched—all reinforcing the legend of a still-active curse.

In the dense jungles of Kerinci Seblat National Park, Sumatra, stories have circulated for generations about the Orang Pendek—a mysterious bipedal ape said to roam the forest floor. Witnesses from tribal hunters to Western researchers describe a 4–5-foot-tall creature, covered in dark hair, walking upright and feeding on roots, grubs, and forest fruits. Unlike spirits or shapeshifters of folklore, the Orang Pendek is treated locally as a real, flesh-and-blood animal. For over a century, footprints, sightings, and even hair samples have supported the idea of an undiscovered primate species hiding in this vast, unexplored rainforest.
