Backwoods Creepy - Strange Encounters in the Forest

I’m your host Cull and this is Backwoods Creepy.

Nostalgia is an interesting thing. We love to think back and remember the fun carefree idles of our past, moments and adventures that make up our youth. But remembering and recreating are two very different things. Where one is a nice way to glimpse the world of our childhood selves, the other tends to remind us of the time gone and the ways in which both we, and the world, have changed. Sometimes, maybe even often, not for the better. 

Our first tale is called The Church.

Why is the treeline at night such a scary thing to stare into? Is it because it’s so hard to decipher what's in there, to make out any distinct shapes? Maybe it’s the knowledge that there is bustling life in the inky blackness beyond, a world just out of our sight? Or is it because the darkness there seems to be looking back, staring just as intently at us as we at it? Of course, the truth is, it’s all three and we know it. 

Our second tale is called Bare Footprints in the Ice.

I’m Cull, host of Backwoods Creepy - Strange Encounters in the Forest.

Camping in a pine forest with a bright fire going, some kind of pork sizzling away, a good book, and a white enamel mug with a dram or two of scotch is my idea of heaven. Even just a leisurely stroll with my wife, Julie, and our dogs through a little copse of oak and maple is, in my humble opinion, a hell of a way to spend an afternoon. Here in Maine our cup runneth over with a rich abundance of beauteous backwoods. But I’ve always been more interested in the weird, the odd, and the downright frightening.

A few months back Julie sent me a couple links for subreddits that featured stories from the forest. After tearing through the ones she’d sent and then devouring even more it dawned on me that these stories were demanding to be spoken.

Like I said, I love the unexplained and inexplicable. Moments of high strangeness. Places that pulse with a sense of dread. Tales of true-crime and mysterious missing people. From cryptids to UFOs, ghosts to hauntings, murders, stalkings, and disappearances; I plan to cover it all.

So, each Monday I’ll be bringing you a couple of these tales that I’ve found on Reddit, mainly cribbing from the subs Backwoods Creepy and Creepy Encounters.

Some are fiction, most are real.

I’ve reached out and asked the original poster for permission to tell their tale wherever possible.
