Castle Talk: Artist-Essayist Stephen Bissette on COLD WAR CREATURES

Tonight we’re chatting with Stephen R Bissette, historian and critic, who writes a series of essays included in the new Blu-Ray box set from Arrow, Cold War Creatures: Four Films from Sam Katzman. Bissette is also a well-known comic artist whose work has graced so many great works from DC’s 80s Swamp Thing revival to independent, Eisner-nominated fare like Taboo.

Katzman was a prolific studio exec that produced hundreds of films starting in the early 1930s and concluding in 1972, gaining great notoriety for his ability to turn a sizable profit on a minuscule budget. Arrow has compiled four of Katzman's monster movies from the 1950s in one glorious collection and loaded them up with special features including an 80-page collector’s art book featuring reproduction stills and artwork from each film and new writing by historian and critic, Stephen R. Bissette. The four films include Creature with the Atom Brain, The Werewolf, The Zombies of Mora Tau, and The Giant Claw.

This week we continue a retrospective of films from famed producer Val Lewton with the 1944 film The Curse of the Cat People.
The Curse of the Cat People is a 1944 American psychological fantasy thriller film[1][2][3] directed by Gunther von Fritsch and Robert Wise, produced by Val Lewton, and starring Simone Simon, Kent Smith, and Jane Randolph. Its plot follows Amy, a young girl who befriends the ghost of her father's deceased first wife, Irena, a Serbian fashion designer who descended from a race of people who could transform into cats. The film, which marks Wise's first directing credit, is a sequel to Cat People (1942) and has many of the same characters. However, it is only tangentially related to its predecessor.

Drew Edwards (Story/Script/ Creator of Dr. Lucy Chaplin) is an award-winning comic book writer, horror film historian, music journalist, rock promoter, and showman extraordinaire; these are all guises of the creative force known as Drew Edwards. Best known as the writer and creator of the long-running underground comic book series, Halloween Man, thousands tune in each week to hear him as a cast member of the horror movie podcast, Castle of Horror. Known as “Howlin’” Drew Edwards to many musicians, he’s helped bridge the horror and comic culture worlds with Austin’s legendary music scene with Halloween Man Productions annual “Punk vs. Rockabilly” showcase during SXSW, now in its tenth year, and as a contributing writer for Rockabilly Online. Drew currently lives in Austin, Texas with his wife, musician/activist, Jamie Bahr, and a pair of loveable bunnies.
Brian Crowley (Artist/Inker) a design leader and illustration professional currently working with Fortune 500 companies and multiple agency clients specializing in organizational agile transformation. He lives in Portage Park with his wife Stacey. He’s the creator of the webcomic “Hamster Rage” and has drawn and written numerous other comics.
